MONUMENT TO THE LATE JAMES WOOD ESQ – A mural monument of classic design was last week erected to the memory of the late James Wood Esq in the Oxford Road Wesleyan Chapel, Manchester, by his bereaved family. It consists of a commemorative tablet, four feet wide and seven feet high, partially pyramidal in form, bounded by a bead and hollow moulding in high relief, terminating in the graceful folds of the Grecian honeysuckle. In the upper part is introduced the arms and crest, with heraldic foliage; beneath is the inscription, cut in Roman letters. The tablet rests on a bold projecting plinth, enriched with a water leaf moulding and supported by two massive carved trusses. A carved ornament is skilfully introduced on each side of the tablet, at its junction with the plinth, which relieves the projection, and gives character and elegance to the general outline. The whole is executed from a design furnished by Richard Lane, architect, in pure statuary marble, finally polished; and in its form and details, the effect is highly classical and satisfactory. -Report continues with a transcript of the inscription [Manchester Courier 14 September 1850.
