£6,436 CHURCH CONTRACT METHODIST SCHEME AT SPONDON The building committee of King street and Traffic-street Methodist Circuits, Derby, has accepted the tender of Messrs. Gee, Walker and Slater, Derby, for the building of the new Methodist Church at Spondon. The contract price is £6,430. More than 20 firms asked to tender, and of these nine were chosen to submit tenders for consideration by the committee.  The work will be put in hand at once.  The stone-laying ceremony is fixed for Saturday, December 2, and the church is to be opened July while the Methodist conference session at Leicester. Spondon Methodist Church is built to replace the former Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist churches, which will be sold. The church will stand at the junction of Station-road and the new road to be constructed.  Later a Sunday assembly hall to accommodate 300, with three additional vestries and usual offices, is to be added, bringing the total cost of the scheme to £10,000. The architects are A. Brocklehurst and Co., Manchester. The church is to seat 360, with six rooms (two large and four small) for Sunday school purposes. Tin Sunday school rooms will accommodate upwards of 330 scholars.  The church is to be built of brick in the Gothic style, with stone facings and windows. The seats and furniture will be in polished Columbian pine. Provision is made on the site for car park as well as for the hall to be erected later.  [Derby Daily Telegraph12 October 1933 page 7]

NEW CHURCH OPENED - METHODISTS' FINE BUILDING AT SPONDON - The new Methodist Church at Spondon was opened to-day. The new church, which is prominently situated in the Spodon Lane opposite Spondon Hall, is attractively built. The windows are leaded and stone faced, with coloured glass. The church has accommodation for 360 people. The pews are ranged in semi-circles. The woodwork, with the exception of the communion table and chairs is of polished pine. The ceiling, which is also of pine, is arched. The communion table and chairs  are of English oak  The carpets are in blue, The church is lighted by modern enclosed lighting. A striking feature of its ornamentation is a large cross white and gold on the wall above the choir. Arrangements are being made for the installation of an organ in about six months' time. In addition to the main body of the church there are the Sunday School premises, with an assembly room to accommodate 200 people, a church parlour for 100, a kitchen, and two class rooms. There are also vestries for the minister, stewards, and choir. At later date it is intended to add a hall to hold 300 people, and three additional classrooms flor the Sunday school.
