THE LATE SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH, A MEMORIAL HOSPITAL IN DERBYSHIRE - The executors of the late Sir Joseph Whitworth of Stancliffe Hall have announced their decision upon the question of providing a suitable memorial to the deceased baronet. It is proposed to erect a new cottage hospital on a plot of ground situated on the high road between Darley Dale and Matlock Bridge. Mr Beaumont of Manchester is the architect and the contract for the work has been let to Messrs Southern and Sons of Salford. The scheme is intended to provide the district with a hospital of its own and to obviate, in case of accidents, the necessity of taking the sufferers to the Infirmary in the county town, as has been the practice hitherto. The plans, already submitted to the North Darley Local Board, show that there is to be a general hospital in the main building with adjoining rooms for the medical officer and matron. There will also be a large sitting-room for convalescent patients. The whole of these rooms will have a south-western aspect and overlook the beautiful scenery for which the valley of the River Derwent is celebrated. An additional building within a short distance of the main structure will also be erected, with two wards, exclusively for the use of infectious diseases, and provided with adjoining matron=s and medical officer’s rooms. There will also be a disinfecting chamber for the use of the inmates and general public. At the approach to the buildings will be formed a carriageway, with lodge and gates, close to the main thoroughfare. [Manchester Guardian 22 June 1888 page 5].
