Seven shops with living accommodation above, two storeys high of brick with flat roof intended to serve a new council estate were to be provided. At a time before mass car ownership and supermarkets, shops had to be within walking distance of the houses leading to the development of local shopping centres. Ellesmere Port Council were offering tenancies for Grocer, Chemist, Butcher, Newsagent, Confectioner, Greengrocer, Hardware, Ladies Hairdresser Fish Monger etc. There was to be no duplication of trades thereby granting traders full monopoly over the estate and eliminating unrestricted competition.
