The Lido Cinema was opened by James Alfred Russel, Mayor of Bolton on 27th March 1937 and operated as an independent by John Buckley Theatres Ltd. With 1800 seats, the cinema was intended for both film and live stage use with a proscenium opening 40 feet wide and a stage 23 feet deep. There were eight/ nine dressing rooms. Other facilities included a café and restaurant. A feature of the Art Deco style auditorium was a painted mural of a Venetian scene in a panel over the proscenium arch. The cinema closed on 22 January 1998 and demolished in 2006. An apartment block known as “The Picture House” now occupies the site
