Lads Club, Heyrod Street, Ancoats
OPENING OF A LADS' CLUB IN ANCOATS - Lord Aberdeen visited Ancoats yesternight week for the purpose of opening the Heyrod Street Lads' Club. The new building, which has been provided in connection with the Heyrod Street Institute at a cost of about £6,800, furnishes accommodation for between three hundred and four hundred lads for reading, games, gymnastics, and commercial and technical instruction of an evening. The club, which was established twelve years ago, is divided into junior and senior members and each side has its separate rooms, one of rooms being set apart for the elder lads and young men for billiards and smoking. There are cricket and football teams and a boys' brigade connected with the club. The opening function yesternight week was attended by a large number of friends of the institution, Mr. W. J. Crossley presiding. ….. Mr. C. E. B. Russell, hon. secretary, gave a short account of the work of the Institute and Club, and explained this latest extension of the building made it, possible to provide club for girls which would be open of an evening.
