Higher Broughton Synagogue, Duncan Street, Higher Broughton
Opened by Lionel Walter Rothchild MP on Monday 2 September 1907 and consecrated by the Chief Rabbi, Dr, Adler, the synagogue was designed by Delissa Joseph, and supervised on site by W T Gunson & Son of Manchester.
MANCHESTER - The new synagogue about to be erected by the Higher Broughton Congregation will occupy the garden ground at the corner of Broughton-road and Duncan-street. It will have accommodation for about 400 persons. The main entrance from Duncan-street will have the main staircase (to the gallery above, set apart for the ladies of the congregation) enclosed in an octagonal tower. The ark, reading platform and pulpit will, according to custom, be arranged at the east end of the building with the choir behind. A dome in ferro-concrete will surmount the octagonal tower, and the main vestibule will be arcaded. JEWISH INSTITUTIONS: A NEW SYNAGOGUE, LADS' CLUB IN MEMORY OF MR RALPH FRANKENBURG - Two important events in the history of the Jewish community in Salford and Manchester was celebrated on Monday when a new synagogue for the Higher Broughton Hebrew Congregation at Duncan Street, Higher Broughton was opened by the Hon Walter Rothchild, MP and subsequently consecrated by the Chief Rabbi (Dr. Adler), and the same gentlemen also assisted at the formal opening of a new lads' club, the first of its kind in the district, which has to form the headquarters of the Jewish Lads' Brigade, at Grove House, Bury New Road Higher Broughton [The Salford Reporter Saturday, September 7, 1907’
A vaguely Middle Eastern style of architecture was chosen by Joseph. The Manchester Evening News gave up the struggle to define the style, reporting simply that "The new synagogue is built on those lines which are a distinguishing feature of the London suburban synagogue" [Manchester Evening News 2 September 1907 Page 2]
