Yesterday afternoon, Sir S Morton Peto, Bart MP laid the foundation stone of a Baptist Chapel in Hallfield Road, Bradford. The chapel is to be built for Rev J P Chown, pastor of the Second Baptist (Particular) Church at Bradford at a cost of £5,000 or £6,000. LAYING THE FOUNDATION-STONE OF HALLFIELD BAPTIST CHAPEL, BRADFORD. - The foundation-stone of Hallfield Baptist Chapel was laid yesterday afternoon, by Sir S. M Peto, Bart, MP. The new building will consist of a chapel, capable of seating 1,000 persons; a school room, for 350 children in classes; a lecture room for 130 persons; a class room, with gallery, for 80 infants; two class rooms; a tea room or class room; a room for school library, minister's vestry, ladies' vestry, deacon's large vestry, cellar kitchen, and other apartments. The style adopted will be generally called Gothic. Internally the chapel will be 53 feet wide, and 78 feet long, exclusive of organ recess, which is 14 feet deep; height of side walls, 30 feet; height from floor to centre part of ceiling, 41 feet. The construction of the interior divides the space laterally into a centre and two side compartments, as "nave and aisles." Coupled iron columns, each seven inches diameter and three inches apart, support the side galleries, and are carried upwards to receive pointed arches of brickwork, which carry the roof above. The total cost of the chapel, including heating apparatus, gas, and chapel and school furniture, will be about £6,500. The architects are Messrs. Paull and Ayliffe, of Manchester and Burnley. BRADFORD —The Baptist chapel in Hallfield road has been opened. The new buildings comprise a chapel, with side and end galleries, containing seated accommodation for 1,000 persons; a school-room, 60 feet by 30 feet; a lecture-room, 30 feet by 25 feet; minister's vestry, deacons' vestry, and ladies' vestry, class-room for eighty infants, two class-rooms for adults, a library-room, a large tea-room, and sundry other apartments and conveniences. The front of the chapel is towards Manningham-lane, and is set back 10 yards from the street boundary. The schools are placed in the rear of the chapel, having an end frontage next Hallfield-street; and distinct street entrances are provided to the lecture-room and for the boys and girls to the large upper school room. The design has been based upon Mediaeval principles, and the details are all of Gothic form. The cost of the buildings and furnishings is about £5,000. To this has to be added excepted items, and also the architects' commission, the clerk of works' salary, and the purchase of the land, making in all about 7,0002. The architects were Messrs. Paull & Ayliffe, of Manchester; the con tractor for the masons' and carpenters' works, Mr. B. Illingworth; for the plumbers', glaziers', and smiths' works, Mr. J. BRADFORD — Hallfield Baptist chapel, Bradford, was opened on Wednesday week. The chapel has been erected in the Gothic style. The interior form of the chapel is that of a parallelogram, 75 feet by 53 feet, and the width is divided into a central and two sides sections, as “nave and aisles.” Coupled iron columns are introduced (having a clear space of 3 inches between), and from these spring moulded pointed arches, in five bays on each side. The ceiling to the nave is semi-octagonal in shape, divided into panels by constructive timbers (stained and varnished), and is considerably lower than the outside slope of the roof. In the rear of the pulpit is a spacious recess for organ and choir. The chapel is lighted by gaseliers suspended from above the apex of each arch, and by brackets under the galleries, and with the school building in the rear is heated upon Messrs. Haden's system, which supplies warm air up to 70 degrees, and serves as a means of ventilation also. Accommodation is provided for 1,000 worshippers. A school-room, 60 feet by 20 feet, a lecture-room, 30 feet by 25 feet, infants' class-room, minister's, deacons', and ladies' vestries, with other apartments, are all contained in the school building.
