Greyhound Racing Track, White City, Old Trafford
The company has been formed to purchase 11 acres of freehold land formerly the well-known White City pleasure grounds and to build and equip a Greyhound Racecourse including a track capable of accommodating 60,000 spectators with kennels and trainers’ accommodation and a "Motor Car Parking Ground." At Swain’s suggestion, the directors were also considering the building of a Super Dance Hall and Restaurant. [Manchester Guardian 21 November 1927 page 13]. The land was sold to Canine Sports Ltd (a holding company) on 1 November 1927 but the proposals attracted considerable local opposition from among others Stretford Council and the local churches. Notwithstanding threats of legal action, the promoters continued with the construction of the stadium. Greyhound racing started on Whit Monday 28 May 1928 and continued throughout the week. The company was taken over by Belle Vue 1930 and the stadium finally closed in 1982 and was demolished. A retail park now stands on the site.
