FRIENDS' SCHOOLS, MANCHESTER.-These schools, which were opened on Saturday last, are situated in Byrom-street, between Byrom Place and Atkinson-street, having frontages to the three streets. The elevations are plain and effective in appearance, being faced with stock bricks relieved with ashlar masonry, which present a decided improvement to the architecture of the locality. The schools have an entrance from Byrom Place, communicating with the basement storey, which is very lofty, and contains accommodation for the adults, with separate classrooms. The ground floor is entered by a spacious staircase from Atkinson Street, which comprises 12 separate classrooms and infant school, and on the first floor is a very lofty and imposing meeting room, with two separate classrooms. The building is heated by means of hot water, and efficient ventilation is provided throughout. The building has been executed by Messrs. R. Neill and Sons, builders, Manchester, involving an outlay of about £3,200, a considerable addition thereto being caused by defective foundations. The whole has been carried out under the superintendence of the architect, Mr. John Lowe, of Manchester. [Manchester Times 24 December 1886 page 7]
