At an extraordinary meeting of the Salford School Board, the Board accepted the tender of R Neill & Sons £11,405. It is to be built from the designs of Mr H E Stelfox, ARIBA [MCN 10 December 1898]

THE TWELFTH NEW SCHOOL OF SALFORD BOARD - The memorial stone of the twelfth school provided by the Salford School Board was laid by Mr Robert Vaughan Smith, a member of the School Board. The building will have a frontage to North Grecian-street, Broughton and will accommodate 1090 children; 500 girls on the first floor and 590 infants on the ground floor. It is intended that the existing premises in Grecian-street and the new building shall form one school, to be reorganised so that the boys will occupy the former building and the girls and infants the new one. Both the departments of the school in course of erection will be built on the central hall system - a large assembly hall being provided on each floor, into which eight classrooms in the girls' and nine in the infants' department open, each classroom accommodating from 50 to 60 children. Special provision is to be made in the basement for laundry classes and cookery classes will be held on the first floor. If possible it is proposed to illuminate the school with the electric light. The site forms part of the Clowes estate and has been purchased subject to a chief rent of £67 per annum. It is estimated that the buildings, including an ample playground, furnishings, caretaker's house and all other appointments will cost £14,000. The architect is Mr H E Stelfox, Manchester, and the contractors are Messrs R Neill and Sons. [Manchester City News 24 June 1899 Page 6]
