EXTENSION OF CO-OPERATIVE PRINTING PREMISES, NEW MOUNT STREET, MANCHESTER. - The plan and elevation show the completed scheme erected for the Co-operative Printing Society Ltd., in New Mount-street, Manchester.  The centre portion of these works was commenced in 1873 and owing to increased trade, was extended in 1884. The support given to the society by the co-operative bodies has necessitated the present extension, which is reproduced in the accompanying illustration. The whole of the basement floor is taken up with modern printing machinery for the production of letterpress printing

On the ground floor are the stock-rooms and general warehouse, with a suite of offices added by this extension. The lithographic and ruling departments occupy the whole of the first floor while the bookbinding and composing-rooms are provided for on the second and third floors respectively, the latter being specially lighted from the roof. A large area is set out in the Mansard roof for males' and females' dining-rooms and cooking kitchens. To bring the works up-to-date, the old boilers and chimney have been pulled down, and a complete scheme of electric driving and lighting has been installed, each machine being coupled to a motor which is driven by current supplied by the corporation mains. Internally the walls are lined with white glazed brickwork.  The exterior facings are Accrington best plastic bricks, with buff terra-cotta dressings. The whole of the architectural and engineering work has been designed by, and carried out under the superintendence of, Mr. Ernest Woodhouse, architect, Mosley-street, Manchester.
