MORE IMPROVEMENTS IN DEANSGATE - The improvements carried out in the westerly end of Deansgate are greatly changing the appearance of the thoroughfare. Another important scheme has been launched by Councillor Aspinall, who is to build an imposing block of shops on the site between Whitaker's drapery establishment and Howell Croft. Some time ago the Corporation purchased a block of property in connection with the widening of Deansgate and Howell Croft. Councillor Aspinall has acquired from the Corporation a portion of the land, and on the site he proposes to erect 11 shops. Nine of these will have a frontage to Deansgate and two to Howell Croft. The plans, which have been prepared by Messrs T E Smith and Son, architects and surveyors, have received the sanction of the Streets Committee. The shops will have a frontage of 130 feet in Deansgate. They will be three storeys with basement, and will be constructed of terra cotta, with granite pilasters between each shop. The block will have a pediment and two corner towers. The scheme includes a large hall on the top floor. The entrance will be in Howell Croft, and the hall, which is 56 feet square, will have four ante-rooms. The demolition of the property is to be commenced next month, and the work of construction will be begun as soon as possible. [Bolton Evening News 15 July 1910 page 3]
