WHETSTONE - On October 15th, 1887, the memorial stone of the Congregational School Chapel, Whetstone, N., was laid, and it was opened on May 2nd, 1888, for public worship. The style of the building is a very simple treatment of the Early Gothic. It is faced with white bricks, with Bath-stone dressings, and tiled roofs. Accommodation on upper floor —School chapel, 60 feet by 35 feet, for about 350 adults, with a vestry, tea-making room, etc. Two fireproof staircases of ample width lead down from this floor to spacious lobbies. On ground floor will be an infants' classroom, 25 feet by 18 feet; a lecture room, 30 feet by 35 feet, with vestry, 14 feet by 11 feet; and five classrooms, 13 feet 9in. by 9. feet 6in. each.  A corridor, 6 feet wide, leads to lecture room and classrooms. It will be heated by hot-water pipes, and be well ventilated. The contract for the building, including additional classrooms in the rear, lighting, heating, etc., is £2,359. The architect is Mr. George Baines, 4, Great Winchester Street, E.C., whose designs were accepted in a limited competition. The builder is Mr. R. G. Battley, 21, Old Kent Road, S.E.
