On Saturday the foundation stones of a new Congregational church at Marple Bridge were laid by Lord Edward Cavendish MP and Mr J F Cheetham MP. The architects of the building are Messrs Barker and Ellis, of Manchester, and the church is to supersede the present building which was erected in 1787.

Yesterday a new Congregational chapel at Marple Bridge, built at a cost of over £2,000 from the designs of Messrs Barker and Ellis, architects, Manchester, was opened. [Manchester Guardian21 October 1887, page 6]
