Huddersfield Road Branch of Stalybridge Co-operative Society was opened at the end of June 1884. On 25 April, 1883 a special general meeting of members empowered the building committee to purchase a plot of land belonging to the executors of Robert Platt, at the corner of Huddersfield Road and Mottram Road. Gregory Gill was retained as architect, and on 9 November 1883, the tender of Garside, Barnes and Co. was accepted. Later A. Chorlton undertook to supply fixtures.
