ASHTON-UPON-MERSEY — The foundation-stone of the new clock-tower of the National school at Ashton-upon-Mersey has been laid. The tower will be built of grey-ended bricks, and faced with dressings of Runcorn stone. It will be surmounted by a cupola of wood, in which will be hung five bells. The tower is intended for a clock, which will be made after Sir Edmond Beckett’s specification, with three illuminated dials, and will strike the hours and chime the Westminster quarters. Messrs Wilson & Oldham, of Manchester, are the architects. [Builder 5 May 1877 page 462-463]
