A NEW CHURCH IN PENDLETON – On Saturday afternoon the Right Rev the Lord Bishop of Manchester consecrated the new church of St Paul, Paddington, Pendleton. The church, a plain substantial edifice, built of stone, is on the south side of Ellor Street. The frontage to the street is the window of the chancel, to the west of which is a side porch, and the corresponding corner on the east is the vestry and a small space for the organ, which has yet to be built. The body of the church consists of a nave and side aisles and a gallery over them at the east end. Between the nave and aisles the roof is supported by five arches, corresponding with decorated windows on each side; whilst behind the gallery there is a window corresponding with that of the chancel. The entrance to the gallery is on the same side as the porch already named, and there is a second entrance to the body of the church just below the front of the gallery on the north side. The reading desks, pulpit and seats seem to be of oak-coloured deal, and the seats are all open. The body of the church is constructed for 640 adults and one half of the seats are to be free. The gallery has been built to hold 240 children, there being about 280 in the Sunday schools connected with the church. The foundation stone of the church was laid on 7 July 1855. It has cost about £4,000, and the site about £300. Mr Shellard of King Street Manchester was the architect, the builder being Mr M Froggett, Cheetham Hill Road.
