THE NEW SPANISH CHURCH - Yesterday the handsome new Roman Catholic church of St James, which has been built near Manchester-square, Marylebone, at a cost of £40,000, to replace the old chapel of the Spanish Embassy, was formally opened with Pontifical High Mass, the ceremony being performed by Mgr. Patterson, Bishop of Emmaus, in the presence of a very large number of the clergy and laity of that communion. …..  The new church, which stands on the northern side of George- street, opposite to the northern aisle of the old fabric, is of Early 13th century style, and consists of a nave, four aisles, transepts, choir, and lady chapel, to which, at a future time; will be added a tower. The architects of the new building are Messrs. Goldie, Child, and Goldie, of Kensington. The Church of St. James, Spanish-place, was originally the chapel attached to the Spanish Embassy, in the days of the Penal Laws, when it was not lawful for English Roman Catholics to build churches and chapels of their own, and it served as such almost down to a time within the memory of persons who are still living.[Times 30 September 1890 page 3]
