Founded as a chapel of ease to St Mary the Virgin, Stockport, St George's was built in 1831–32 to a Gothic design by T. W. and C. Atkinson. A grant of £4,788 was given towards its construction by the Church Building Commission. A shallow chancel was added in 1882–83.
