Church of St. Aloysius, (RC), Park Place, Ardwick Green
ARDWICK GREEN - The new Roman Catholic Church of St. Aloysius, in Park-place, Ardwick Green, near Manchester, was opened last week. The church is cruciform, Early English in style. It consists of nave, transepts, chancel, two chapels, sacristies, porch, baptistery, and tower with spirelet, and is built of brick, with stone dressings. It measures, externally 92 feet by 48 feet; and across the transepts its width is 72 feet In height the nave is 60 feet to the ridge of the roof. The chancel arch, which is pointed, is 21 feet span, and 36 feet to the apex, moulded and supported with granite shafts, having carved capitals and moulded bases. The tower from base to apex is 95 feet high. The roof of nave, consisting of seven principals, is in one span of 43 feet, in pitch pine, formed with panels between the purlins. The whole of the church is benched, and, including a gallery, is calculated to seat 800 people. The cost of the edifice, including seating, is about £3,200; it has been built by Mr. Healey, contractor, of Salford, from the designs and under the supervision of Mr. William Nicholson, 51, King-street, Manchester.
