CHRIST CHURCH SCHOOLS, PATRICROFT - These schools, of which the foundation-stone was laid on the 30th ult., are being erected on ground adjoining the Church. The building is set back from the line of the street, and is thus surrounded by the playgrounds, of which there are two. Owing to the restricted size of the plot, the building has been designed in two storeys. The ground floor contains the infants' schoolroom, 60 feet by 28 feet, with class-room 24 feet by 16 feet adjoining. A boiler-room is also obtained by enclosing the space under one of the staircases. The upper floor contains a school room for boys and girls with a class-room, both of the same size as those on the ground floor. A lavatory is provided on each landing, and the usual offices. The Schools will accommodate about 516 children. The buildings are of brick, the outside being of the best selected common bricks set in English bond and relieved with string courses and arches of stock bricks. The inside walls are also of selected common bricks prepared for paint. The upper floor and roof are supported on iron columns, and the roofs are visible as far as the collar beams. The stairs are of stone without winders. The rooms are warmed by open fireplaces, of which there are three in each of the large rooms. The gables are all hipped and terminated by hip knobs, while from the centre of the class-room roof rises a tapering belfry. The building is being erected from the designs and under the superintendence of the architect (Mr. John Lowe, Manchester) by Messrs Wade Brothers, builders, Miles Platting. The total cost will be about £1,300. [Architect 15 July 1871 page 35]
