MARTON-CUM-GRAFTON - On Tuesday week the new church at Marton-cum-Grafton, Yorkshire, was consecrated. The cost of the building has been £1,700. It has been built to accommodate 122 persons, and has been erected by Mr. Joshua Naden, builder, of Knaresborough, from plans prepared by Mr. John Ladds, architect, London. It consists of a nave 42ft. long, 21 ft. 6in. wide, 17ft. high to the wall plate, and 35ft. high to the ridge. The chancel is 22ft. long by 18ft. wide, 14ft. 6in. high to the wall plate, and 29ft. high to the ridge. The style is Early Decorated. Mr. Wm. Lewis, architect, of York, was appointed by the building committee to superintend the works. [Building News 21 January 1876 page 76]

MARTON CHURCH, YORKSHIRE.  Sir - With respect to the notice of the above work in your paper of this date, I should feel much obliged if you would kindly state in your next issue that the church was erected from my designs and under my personal superintendence, and that Mr. Lewis, of York, was appointed clerk of works by the committee on my nomination. The paragraph as it now stands appears to me to read that the committee dispensed with my services as soon as the plans were prepared, and that they employed Mr. Lewis, architect, of York, to superintend the erection of the buildings, which was not the case. I am, etc., JOHN LADDS. 4, Chapel-street, Bedford-row. W.C.,January 21st, 1876.
