The widening of the Lancashire Bridge and the rebuilding of the above ancient hostelry which are now about completed, have effected a great improvement in this part of Stockport. The architects have taken advantage of the site to produce a picturesque little building which is being finished in a very complete and careful manner as a house of entertainment, with billiard-room, club-room, dining rooms, bedrooms, etc. A good feature of the exterior is the well-executed carving by Mr Milson, the heraldic devices of old families connected with Stockport and various designs of hunting the buck, and figures of the buck and dog being cleverly carved between the windows and over the doorways. The building is of red brick with stone dressings.[British Architect 30 May 1890 Page 385]
