Situated on Bolton Road adjacent to the now vanished Victoria Bridge (William Owen) which crossed one of the original tidal creeks. This creek was dammed off and later infilled, the bridge still remaining under Bolton Road. The inn began as a Temperance Hotel but within a couple of years the villagers requested Lever to apply for a licence.
