Lady Henry Somerset yesterday opened the new wing which has been added to the Bethesda Home for Crippled and Incurable Children, Cheetham Hill, as a memorial to the late Mr Leonard K Shaw. ..... Mr Crossley gave some detailed account of the Bethesda Home, which was opened about 14 years ago. The number of cripples in Manchester is, he said, thought to be about one thousand. The Committee had traced about 850. Though all these were not badly crippled, they still required attention. The extension had been in use for only a few weeks, yet the number of inmates had greatly increased, and there were many more cripples waiting to come in. The total cost of the building would be about £9,100. [Manchester Guardian 17 November 1904 page 4]

While the Building News report names the architects and builder, other details are at variance with the Manchester Guardian report:  On Saturday, November 23, the new extension of Bethesda Homes, Manchester, was formally opened by Lady Somerset. The cost of the work was about ,4,000, the architects being Messrs Maxwell and Tuke, of Manchester, and the builders Messrs Burgess and Galt, of Ardwick. [Building News 9 December 1904 page 849]
