Bacup Northern School (Architectural Competition)
Bacup Education Authority has awarded the following premiums for the best designs for the new Northern School to accommodate three hundred and fifty scholars at a cost of £7.000: £20, Messrs. Butterworth and Duncan, architects, Rochdale; 2, £10. Mr. Arthur T. Greenwood, Manchester, 3, £5, Mr. Brocklehurst, Waterfoot. [Manchester Courier 20 May 1908 page 3]
Mr A Brocklehurst, of Manchester, placed third, has sent in no less than three designs, marked 4a, 4b, 4c, and the second one securing the third premium. This plan is practically a parallelogram, with five class rooms 10 a row,and a stairs at each end, having a centrally placed hall 4l feet by 30 feet, with side lights, and it is approached by a corridor at each end. Only a narrow slip of inclined playground, 7 feet to 8 feet wide, is left at each end, from which the entrances open. These, in the opinion of the assessor, would form dangerous slides during the winter. The same blemishes as regards entrances, cloakrooms, and central hall mentioned before are conspicuous in this design, as well as in the two other plans which Mr Brocklehurst submitted.
