Austwick 114 Duffield Road Strutts Park Derby
The house was built in 1902 for J J Robins who had purchased a plot of land from the Strutt family on which to build a new house. At a time when Duffield Road was just becoming a desirable area built upon the former park of St Helens House, the pavements were raised and embellished with chains supported by iron posts from the local foundry.
In an earlier article I have pointed out how, by arranging the rooms so that their principal windows look out diagonally, some of the disadvantages of detached houses in rows may be minimized by substituting a view up and down the street for that of the houses on the other side of the street. The angle bays and the windows set diagonally in the recess in front of the house in Derby, have been planned with this object in view.[B Parker The Craftsman p64]
