The accommodation of the schools was for 1,000 children, namely 300 infants on the ground floor and 700 boys and girls on the first floor. The cost of the site was £5,000, and of the buildings £15,000. The Education Department having raised objection to the limited capacity of the site, which only contained 2,743 square yards, a playground on the roof was provided, the security of the children being assured by iron railings placed on a substantial parapet. Both mixed and infants’ departments were provided with spacious central halls for combined instruction, drill, singing, and the like. On the ground floor, in addition to the infants’ school there was a cookery kitchen for the girls. [Manchester Guardian 20 July 1894 Page 7]
