WITHINGTON —St. Paul's Church, Withington, near Manchester, has been lengthened, and a chancel, chancel aisle, organ chamber, and vestry have been added. The plaster ceiling has been removed, disclosing the timbers of roof, which have been stained and varnished. The chancel is fitted up with carved oak stalls, the front being moveable in order to show the rich encaustic tiling by Minton; and the gas standards, lectern, and communion railing are of polished brass- work, by Skidmore. The pulpit and font are of Caen stone and marble, richly panelled and carved by Mr. Bonehill, of Manchester, from the architect's design. There are two sunlights to the nave and brackets under the gallery, and the heating is by Haden's warm-air apparatus. The windows in the chancel are filled with stained glass, by Ward and Hughes, of London, representing scenes in the history of St. Paul, and also the Saviour's Incarnation, Crucifixion, and Assension. Increased accommodation for about 250 persons has been obtained by the alterations and additions, which have been executed by Mr Terras, builder, Manchester, under the superintendence of the architect, Mr. John Lowe, of the same city.
