Additions: Girls’ Reformatory Schools, Hampstead.
Works comprised new schoolroom, laundry buildings, dining-room, lavatories, etc. Accepted tender £2,533
In 1860 the Hampstead Reformatory for Girls opened at 9 Church Row, Hampstead but by 1873 plans were in hand to transfer to larger premises. Heathfield House, a large property on Holford Road, at the southern edge of Hampstead Heath was acquired and altered. After the new premises were officially certified on 17 April 1876, the girls and staff were transferred from Church Row. Heathfield House could accommodate up to 120 girls, who were aged from 10 to 16 at their date of admission. The operation of the Reformatory at its new location carried on very much as before. A large laundry had been constructed, where the older girls were employed, while the younger ones were occupied with cooking, housework, needlework and knitting. The reformatory was formally closed on 30 June 1891
