PENDLETON - The new abattoirs built for the Pendleton Co-operative Industrial Society in Cheltenham-street are now approaching completion. The buildings are faced externally with stock brick, relieved by terracotta dressings, from the works of Mr. J. C. Edwards, Ruabon. All the slaughter-houses, meat stores, sausage factory, engine-house, office, etc., are lined throughout with white glazed brick. All floors are flag, and laid upon a 6in. bed of concrete, with the exception of lairs, which are paved with Macclesfield sets upon a bed of concrete and grouted with cement. In addition to the above buildings, there is stabling accommodation for 16 horses. The general contractors have been Messrs. Statham and Sons, Pendleton; and the cost of buildings and machinery (exclusive of land) will be about £6,000. The whole have been built from the plans and superintendence of Mr. Frederick Smith, architect, 6, Brown-street, Manchester, and under the immediate supervision of Mr. James Atkinson as clerk of works.
