William Wright

William Wright was. born at Toft, Knutsford, Cheshire and by 1851 was a journeyman joiner living in Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester. By 1855 he had removed to Lancaster where he found employment as an architect’s clerk, later an assistant and clerk of works for Austin and Paley, architects. He remained with the practice until about 1878 when he set up on his own account in Lancaster as a Building Surveyor – more accurately a Quantity Surveyor – while still retaining strong links with Austin and Paley. From this time onwards, he prepared and distributed Bills of Quantities on behalf of Austin and Paley as evidenced in many of the published advertisements for contracts. About 1891 he entered into partnership with his son Samuel (1852-1930).
He was a staunch Methodist. Census retains indicate that he was married three times – to Mary, Sarah and Ellen.
