William Welford was born at Brill, Buckinghamshire, the son of William and Mary Welford. In the mid-1850 the family moved to Liverpool and Lancashire and by 1871 were living in Over Darwen where William Welford junior was training as an architect. In 1875 he married Florence Mona at Chorlton-cum-Hardy, near Manchester, and probably moved there at this date. By 1881 he was in partnership with George Hartley Goldsmith and Henry Goldsmith under the style Goldsmith Son and Welford. Some of the Goldsmith family’s most significant commissions were undertaken in the period 1881-1885 and it is interesting to speculate on the extent Welford’s contribution before his untimely death.
