Born at Rawcliffe near York on 17 June 1890, the son of Benjamin and Mary Ann Exley. By 1911 he was living with his sister and brother-in-law in Fallowfield, Manchester. His occupation in the census of that year is given as “Ladies Cutters Assistant,” possibly an error in transcription. Nothing is known of his architectural career (if any), apart from a kitchen extension at Durham (1906) and a house at Gatley (1910). He joined up at the beginning of the First World War and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in an Infantry Regiment in 1915. Later he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. The RIBA Kalendars published between 1919 and 1937 contain no entries under his name.

William. Ramage Exley died on 18 November 1969 at the General Hospital Southampton and was survived by his widow, Gwendoline Victoria ExIey.
