William Henry Hodson was born in Manchester and was trained as an architect. On 9 August 1851 he married Mary, youngest daughter of George Yates Esq, civil engineer, Burnley at St Augustine’s Roman Catholic Chapel, Granby Row, Manchester. He had commenced practice by 1851 (sale of cottage property, Ellor Street, Salford) and continued to advertise similar sales until 4 February 1854. His involvement as architect is uncertain; the properties were generally sold already tenanted.  In the mid-1850s he emigrated to the United States, where he “practising with great success in New York and Brooklyn" of some years His name first appears in the Montreal City Directory of 1861 and many of his early commissions were for modest residential and commercial buildings erected for their owners or for real estate speculators.

Hodson died in Montreal on 22 September 1892. His practice was continued by Henry A. Jones.
