Robert Victor Sturgeon
Born on 27 June 1887 at Wilmslow, Cheshire, Robert Victor Sturgeon was the son Samuel Sturgeon, cashier and accountant and his wife Elizabeth. He was educated at Hulme Grammar School before being articled to Alfred Ernest Woodhouse, 1903-1908 and remained as his assistant 1908-1912. He passed his qualifying examination and was elected Associate RIBA 1912. In 1914 he was employed by the Co-operative Wholesale Architects Department at 1 Balloon Street, Manchester.
On the outbreak of war, he immediately joined the 17th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, the 2nd City Pals. The Battalion commenced training at Heaton Park, Manchester then in April 1915 moved to Belton Park, Grantham. In July to Lark Hill Camp, Salisbury Plain, for final training before embarkation to France from Folkestone on 8 November 1915. On 9 January 1916 they moved to Suzanne and on the 12th relieved the 16th Manchesters in trenches to the west of Maricourt Wood. On 10 March 1916 he was reported missing, believed killed. His body was never recovered and he is commemorated on Panel 14 of the Thiepval Memorial.
