BASE RECORD

The architect of the Church of St Nicholas at Newchurch is given as Matthew Atkinson, maltster, of Bacup.

He had previously married Betty Lord, daughter of John Lord of Bacup, assumed to be the same John Lord listed as churchwarden when tenders for the new church were invited in 1823.

The marriage notice describes him as being of Cawthorne near Barnsley. This was also the birthplace of the architect Thomas Witlam Atkinson (qv), born in 1799. However, a family connection, or indeed any connection with Corthorne has yet to be found in other records.

Three sons Thomas (1822-), William (1824 - ) and John (1826-). The birth registers of 1824 and i826 describe Matthews occupation as maltster. However, the register of 1822 gives his occupation as a mason.

James Hoyle and Matthew Atkinson, maltsters, corn dealer, dealers and chapmen of Bacup were declared bankrupt on 27 February 1827.

Matthew Atkinson is not included in Colvin British Architect Dictionary of British Architects 1600-1840
