He submitted an entry for the Manchester Assize Court competition in 1859 while living in Blackburn. Returning to Manchester he was chief assistant to James Gasgoine Lynde (1816-83), City Surveyor of Manchester in 1868 but had commenced independent practice by 1871. Census records indicate that he retired before 1891 although he was still listed as an architect in the directory of 1903.
