The son of William Bury, builder, of Bury Fold, Darwen, Joshua Bury was born at Ainsworth, near Bury, in 1858. The family had moved to Hulme, Manchester, by 1861, and Joshua was educated at Cavendish High School and Owens College. He was variously land agent and surveyor to Captain H. A. Clowes' Estates in Salford, and the counties of Derby and Stafford; Lloyds' Manchester Estates in Moss Side, Withington, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, and Chorlton-on-Medlock, the Manley Park Estate in 1898; the Manchester Racecourse Company; and in 1909 the Dean and Canons of Manchester Cathedral.

In 1920 Joshua Bury took his only son, William Neville Broadbent Bury and Robert Edgar Stephenson into partnership under the style Joshua Bury Son and Stephenson. William Neville Broadbent Bury retired from the partnership on 1 April 1935. Following Joshua Bury’s death in August of that year, the firm was continued under the same style by R E Stephenson until his own death in 1955. In 1956 the firm of Joshua Bury, Earle and Company was established and continued till 1980.
