Joseph Jervis was born the third son of Thomas Barlow Jervis, private banker, and his wife Sarah. About 1850, aged 19, he entered into partnership with Nathan Glossop Pennington. The partnership ended on 30 December 1854 by mutual consent, after which no records for Joseph Jervis have been found.
