The son of George Hetherington, draper, and his wife Ann, J C Hetherington commenced independent practice on Carlisle in the early 1870s, employing George Dale Oliver as assistant. In 1876 a partnership was formed between the two men which continued until 31 December 1881. Disillusioned with the practice of architecture, Hetherington moved to London where he established the Artistic Stationery Company, designers and colour printers, although a company of the same name appears to have already existed in Leeds by 1880. The London company was operated as a partnership between JC Hetherington and Sydney Myer until 1894. Hetherington retired in 1897, although the company continued until 1930s.

On 30 January 1887 he married Anne Lucy, (1855- ) daughter of John Wilson.  Having retired to the Lake District, J C Hetherington died on 18 July 1900 at Broomhill, Stair, near Keswick.
