The son of Samuel Percival, woollen merchant and Wedorah, his wife, Joseph Ashton Percival was born in the Hightown district of Cheetham Manchester, in 1860. About 1885 he entered the office of John Henry Burton as an architect’s assistant. In 1899 John Henry Burton took him into partnership as noted in the British Architect:

Mr J H Burton, architect, who has practised for some time past at 2 Guide Lane, Hooley Hill, has removed his offices to 150A Stamford Street, Ashton-under-Lyne. He has also taken into partnership Mr J A Percival who has been his manager for the past fourteen years, and the new firm will be Messrs Burton and Percival. [British Architect 20 January 1899 Page 40].

The partnership was dissolved in 1902 following the death of J H Burton, Joseph Ashton Percival continuing to practice on his own account under the style of Burton and Percival. He would later enter into partnership with Lever under the style Burton Percival and Lever, still with offices at 150a Stamford Street Ashton-under-Lyne. In 1910 he was elected LRIBA.

On 10 September 1885 Joseph Ashton Percival married Jane Ann, daughter of William Jameson at St Mark’s Church, Cheetham Hill. She had been born at Cowes / Parkhurst on the Isle of Wight but was resident in Manchester at the time of her wedding.
