John Stares Rawson was born at Salford, the son of Jonathan Nixon Rawson and Anne Stares Rawson and trained as an architect. He had commenced practice in Manchester by 1876 and had retired by 1891. In the 1890s he moved permanently to Aberdovey, where he and his daughters had been frequent summer visitors.

John Stares Rawson died on 27 May 1910  at Brigydon, Aberdovey, survived by his two daughters, his death being reported at length in the local press:

ABERDOVEY. Obituary - On Friday last the death occurred of Mr. John Stares Rawson, from heart failure, in his seventy-second year, at his residence, Brigydon, Aberdovey. Mr. Rawson. who was a retired architect from Manchester, had resided at Aberdovey for many years. He was a much-respected inhabitant, and great sympathy is felt for his two daughters in their bereavement. He was a vice-president of the Literary Institute and for many years was the honorary librarian, and did a great deal of work for the success of the Library. The funeral was on Tuesday at the Cemetery. The Rev. John Edwards, B.A., vicar of Pwllheli, officiated. The chief mourners were Mrs. Stephen Evans and Mrs. William Owen. daughters; the Rev. Stephen Evans, B.A.. curate of Aberdovey, son-in-law: Mrs. Clark. sister-in-law: Mr. George Stokes, nephew Miss Williams, Morawelon, and Mr. Bolitho. Portsea. the solicitor. A large number of wreaths were sent by the relatives and friends. The flag at the Institute and many other places on the day of the death and funeral was at half-mast. *In 1883 the death by drowning in the River Ribble of a Mr Rawson architect, was erroneously reported in the Builder of 26 May 1883. Later reports gave the name of the victim as Hawley (qv). No explanation / correction of this error has been found. [The Builder volume 44, 26 May 1883, page 699]
