Educated at Bolton High School and Royal Whalley Grammar School, John Ormrod was articled to Bradshaw & Gass from January 1891 to November 1895. He remained as assistant to Bradshaw & Gass 1895-1896 while attending classes at Manchester Technical School and Bolton College of Art. In 1897 he was employed in the Design Branch of the War Office and attended Architectural Association classes. John Ormrod passed the qualifying examination in 1897 and was elected Associate of the RIBA on 7 March 1898, proposed by JJ Bradshaw, J B Gass and R K Freeman. In 1939 he retired as Associate of the RIBA and resigned the RIBA in 1960. Fellow of Manchester Society of Architects and Associate of the Royal Sanitary Institute

John Ormrod commenced independent practice in Bolton in 1898 and was also a lecturer at Bolton Technical School. In 1904 he took Ernest Pomeroy into partnership the latter having moved from Southampton to join Ormrod as assistant in 1899. The partnership ended in 1914 and henceforth John Ormrod practiced from his residence at Walker Fold until his retirement in 1939.
