The son of Charles Walter Maybury, incorporated accountant of Manchester, John Henry Maybury was born in Manchester on 11 October 1858 and educated privately.  He was articled with E. J. Thompson of Manchester, architect, surveyor, and agent to the estates of the late Samuel Brooks, and commenced practice on his own account in 1883. From 1887 he was Surveyor to the Levenshulme Local Board from 1887 to the time of its dissolution eight years later before becoming surveyor to Sir H. W. Gore Booth's Salford and Pendleton estates. He also had a has also a large general practice; successfully competed for and carried out the erection of the Gorton Public Baths, the Levenshulme Wesleyan Sunday Schools, and St. Mark's Schools. Additionally, he designed factories for Messrs McIntyre, Hogg, Marsh and Co., Ltd., Anthony Burgon, Esq., W. H. Porter and Son, Ltd., Aid. Griffiths, and others, together with numerous warehouses, shops and offices in Manchester and Salford, and many private residences in Lancashire and Cheshire. He was also responsible for the development of a number of large building estates.  He was a Fellow of the Manchester Society of Architects from 1891 and became a Licentiate of the Royal Institute in 1911. In 1919 he was joined in partnership by his son, Percy T. Maybury, who continued the practice after his father’s death.For many years he was honorary secretary to the Stretford Division Conservative Association, and he took an active interest in many local institutions. He was Past Provincial Grand Deacon of the Order of Freemasons.

John Henry Maybury, died on 14 July 1926, at Buxton aged 67, was the senior partner of the firm of J. H. Maybury and Son, Manchester.
