James Whittaker was born at Worsley near Eccles, about 1807, the son of Ellis and Alice Whittaker and was the brother of John Williamson Whittaker, architect, Bolton (qv). He was considered one of Bolton’s leading architects in the 1840s, taking George Woodhouse as an articled pupil. However, when he accepted the post of advising architect and engineer under Messrs Ormrod and Hardcastle, George Woodhouse transferred to his brother, John Williamson Whittaker (qv) who was also practising as an architect in Bolton. James Whittaker subsequently gave up the practice of architecture and carried on as a cotton spinning master at Shipton Mill.
