James Bramley Pye was the son of James Pye, ironmonger and his wife Sarah (nee Bramley). He was born on 5 January 1877 at Blackburn but by 1879 the family had moved to St Anne’s-on-the-Sea, and must rank as some of the town’s earliest residents. Details of his training are unknown but by 1901 he was working in Manchester as an architect’s assistant; assistant to Roger Oldham 1904-1913. Elected Associate MSA in 1904. He served during the First War, joining the King's (Liverpool) Regiment in 1915, aged 38, later transferring to the Royal Engineers.
