Herbert Turner was born at Rusholme in 1861, the son of Henry and Hannah Turner and one of eight children. Born in Cornwall, Henry Turner had established a draper’s business at Rusholme. By 1890 Herbert Turner had commenced independent practice with an office in Market Place, near the Exchange. Following his marriage in 1893 the couple moved to Cardiff where all their four children were born. By 1911 the family had returned to Manchester and were living at 68 Cromwell Road, Levenshulme. Herbert Turner appears to have had no involvement with the Manchester Society of Architects and conducted his business from his home address.
