The youngest son of Mark and Matilda Ogden of “Northwood” Crumpsall. His father, Mark Ogden, was an accountant, variously Clerk to the Prestwich Union and Chairman of Blackpool Winter Gardens Company Limited. Herbert was articled to A W Smith of 88 Mosley Street, Manchester from October 1879 and assistant to Pennington & Bridgen from January 1884. In March 1888 he passed the examination in architecture held in London and was eligible for admission as an associate.
